Hardcastle's Spy

In the early hours of a Sunday morning - just over a fortnight after the start of the disastrous Battle of the Somme - the body of a young woman is found in Hoxton.  But all is not as it seems, for she is suspected of being a German spy.

Divisional Detective Inspector Ernest Hardcastle is the head of CID for the Whitehall Division of the Metropolitan Police.  To investigate the murder, he is seconded to Special Branch by its chief, the formidable Superintendent Patrick Quinn.

But unbeknown to Hardcastle this is just a smokescreen.

Such, however, is Hardcastle’s assiduity in the investigation that Quinn - and Colonel Vivian Kell, head of MI5 - begin to wonder if he will upset their arcane plans for deluding the German Intelligence Service

Detective Sergeant Charles Marriott, husband of Lorna, is Hardcastle's long-suffering assistant in both Hardcastle’s Spy and its sequel Hardcastle’s Armistice.
