Hardcastle's Runaway

In March 1919, the head of the CID at New Scotland Yard, sends for Divisional Detective Inspector Ernest Hardcastle of A Division.  Within minutes, Hardcastle finds himself in the office of the Commissioner, General Sir Nevil Macready, who has a task for Hardcastle: find Lily Musgrave, the missing daughter of Austen Musgrave MP.

However, Lily returns home of her own accord, but not before Hardcastle, aided by Detective Sergeant Charles Marriott, has discovered that the headstrong and undisciplined girl provides risqué entertainment for a number of ex-officers who believe that their wartime service entitles them to behave as they please.

When the case apparently comes to a close, Hardcastle turns his mind to arranging the finer details of his daughter Maud’s wedding to Captain Charles Spencer of the Loyal Regiment.

No sooner is the wedding over, than Lily Musgrave goes missing again.  She is eventually found at the the home of Lord Slade, a racehorse owner, but that is not the end of the matter.
