Hardcastle's Frustration

It is March 1918 and the Great War is grinding slowly to its bloody finale.  Divisional Detective Inspector Ernest Hardcastle, head of the Criminal Investigation Department for the A or Whitehall Division of the Metropolitan Police, is called to the body of Ronald Parker that the river police have recovered from the Thames.  But this is just the beginning of a frustrating and complex investigation.

Mavis Parker, the victim’s attractive widow, proves to be a good-time girl, and to complicate matters, all the suspects seem to be known to each other, including a South African who purports to be an actor.

Despite the intervention of Special Branch, Hardcastle, aided by Detective Sergeant Charles Marriott, eventually unravels the mystery almost by chance.
